show me what point would you use to shoot a water buffulo?
« on: March 09, 2009, 10:02:36 pm »
i'm in need of some ideas on point design & material for use on water buffulo. i'm thinking of something about 1" wide, about 300-400gr.  also i'm thinking of hafting it so that the wood of the shaft runs up closer to the tip for extra support. rounder point for extra strength at the tip. scalloped a bit to allow more shaft material at the haft.

anyway show me your ideas. and yes i'm serious. check out my thread on the hunting forum. thanks.

1 "  ? Gonna have to have a good ridge on it to get to those weights. You are probly gonna have to go with something wider to get the grains up there. I;ll do a bit of thinking on this for ya.

As for material,I'd say that raw Texas would be hard to beat. I love the strength it has,and carries a clean sharp edge.

get james parker to make you something out of rhyolite.  the last set of arrows i saw him hunt with looked like mini spears with 300-400 gr points up front.

not so much the point as the shot. you'll need a quartering away shot . buddy of mine still has the overlapped rib section with his broadhead stuck in it. he was using an 80lb compound and one bounced off at 30 yards. the next stuck in the rib at 20. he finally just waited for the quartering shot and went in behind the ribs. that was one pissed off bull.

I would use the same points as on elk.. deer ..bear.. 125 grain stone or steel.. smaller points penetrate deeper.. I believe that a well placed shot will kill just the same no matter the size of the point...  heavier arrows help some with penetration.. but if a follow up shot is required the distance is usually farther out making for a hard shot getting a really heavy arrow into the kill zone... :o so from experience I will say that two blade points penetrate deeper. and will even bust through bone when a three or four blade will be hard pressed to even cut through the hide.. just my opinion.. ;D Hawk
