Vine Maple Bow in Progress
« on: March 01, 2009, 06:35:52 pm »
Hello,

My name is Ray and I am from Washington state. I live on the wet side of the state and we have a lot of vine maple. It's one of our local weeds. Why not make a bow out of one?

Here's something I have been working slowly on for the past few weeks.  Right now it is about 63 inches long and probably pulls close to 60 pounds. This is my first self bow.

She looks pretty good but sheesh, you are not gonna tease us with just one pic are you? How about an unbraced and full draw...and a front profile. ;D

I can only tell you I like the strung profile and positive tiller :)

vine maple is a gorgeous bowwood, I wish it existed here.. :)

I don't have any full draw photos yet. It's not ready for that. Although you could do it; I am taking it easy on the wood only to draw it back as far as I need to until it goes all the way back at the draw weight I like.

Here are some photos of it which were from the past two weeks,

I got my better half to take a photo. I guess it will be ok. I need to finish it off and even out the limbs. The handle and tips are incomplete. Will report back when I have more done.

I have some polishing to do on the ends where the overlays are. I am going to start putting some tru oil on it tomorrow night after working it over with some steel wool.

I believe the upper limb was tillered too much. It's not easy to tell from the photos but I got it on my friend's camera. He advised me to probably go with it or tiller down the bow and possibly lose 5 lbs in draw weight or more. I decided to go with it as is.
