need sealing help and smaller size ...
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:38:42 pm »
alright... now that i have your attention... i have checked out home depot nearby my house (online inventory) and as of this point all i can say is im a bit upset.... i was told not much can beat Spar Urethane (only brand i found so far is "Minwax Helmsman") but uhhhhh the smallest size they carry is 1 gal., i was wondering, would Polyurethane so the job? or could my bow wait for a few months, (family is struggling to get money atm) even though my birthday is coming up on the sixteenth of march (yay its coming closer) i still feel that it isnt going to happen,

i could post pics of my bow now, and as for the dryness, i am confident considering the scale i use goes to tenths of ounces (1/160th of a lb o.o) but as im concerned my bow isnt losing much more weight, when i get my seal, i would like to hear from you on what and how you guys want me to seal this, because as i said i am kinda new to this, and i am, after all, still learning alot.

Thanks in advance,

Josh Bond

i usually shop at lowes but i believe that if you go to the store they will have a smaller container of spar urethane, i know they make a smaller container, i have one and if you are going to make multiple bows go ahead and buy the gallon you'll have a lifetime supply. ;

Look for a spray can...or just use poly.

I was just at Home Depot today....and they had Pint....Quart....and Gallons of Helmsman Spar....and also had two different kinds in Spray Cans....Gloss and Satin....don't know where you live...but every Home Depot I have been in has the Same Inventory...either here in Texas  or in Michigan....maybe you need to ask someone else!!

If we can't help each other what is the point of being here?

I always use the spray can of Helmsman satin if I'm using spar urethane. Lowe's, Wal-mart, Home Depot always have it.

I feel a bit dumb, but what is spar urethane? is it a special type of polyurethane ? or something different? I was thinking it was just a brand  of polyurethane, but obviously not, anyway as usual , doubtfully it available across the ocean!!!

Spar varnishes (nowadays spar urethanes) are specially formulated for use on wood boats or other outdoor wood.  They're UV resistant, stay flexible, and have high water resistance.  They are also designed to be sanded and re-applied as needed.

They're about the toughest, most flexible clear outdoor wood finish available.
