Ever seen osage with ?
« on: February 19, 2009, 11:27:45 pm »
You ever seen osage with no sap wood ? I met a fellow the other day that wants to build a osage bow bad. He brought me three staves from a tree he cut here locally in pa. (Osage around here is rare) One half of the tree apears to be semi normal with around 3/8" or so sapwood however the staves from the other half of the tree have absoloutley no sap wood on them. I'm talking remove the bark and you got a yellow heart wood ring.....How weird is that?
Its November, I'm gone hunt'in.......
Osage is still better.....

Is that side of the tree dead? Is there a cambium under the bark?  ??? ??? ???

Never seen that unless it was old and dead and all the sap wood was rotted off.  :)

I recently cut a standing ash tree, and after splitting, I realized it had no sapwood. Because I cut it in early winter, I couldn't tell for sure if it was alive or not. Obviously, it must have been standing dead, which is probably the case with the osage.

Well it was cut and split last summer and kept in a heated garage so it is pretty dry. Like I said one half of the tree appears to have 3/8" or so sapwood. The other half nothing? just bark and heart wood. My question is do think its safe to just chase first ring or shoud we take it down a ways?

I guess you'll have to decide that by examining the wood. Hard to tell from here! ;D

Maybe the tree was damaged on the no sapwood side? Or wind stressed?

Ryan, I had a tree such as you speak of. It was just for a short ways down the stave, maybe 12".The bark looked normal but that was all.Upon taken it down the sapwood kinda feathered out, in that area. I figured that it was some kind of damage and I cut it before it completely healed/scarred over?

I work a lot of staves that will have a ring of half sapwood and half heartwood ,does the heartwood only side blend end with a sapwood ring on the other side of the tree?
if you can shoot over them , they ain't to far
