need help with rawhide

Im trying to build my first bow, and not make fire wood again. I think I need to back it. the wood is hickory (board). The only rawhide I can find is the super large dog bone, will it work?

I think those dog chew rawhide bones will work, but I've heard they're a bit thick. The best rawhide is from a whitetail doe, that you've processed yourself. If you want enough rawhide to back a bow, drop me a PM, I've got lots and I'm sure I can help you out.

You can order rawhide backing via many traditional archery suppliers.

A rawhide dog bone will work (the large ones) but it will be thick.

You dont  have to go with rawhide,cloth works too ,Ive even seen brown paper bag used for a backing.Check out a goodwill,or second hand store,rummage sale, lots of opportunities for backing material to be found for a couple of bucks.

I have a friend that swears by big dog bones,He did say you never know what you might find inside
of one of them and you usually had to thin it down some after you got it cleaned up and on the back.

depending on where you are, if you have a native american craft store, they have rawhide for drums, it is deer hide and thinner than the dog chews. it is real easy to work with.
