MAPLE SELFBOW made by me and you lots o pics
« on: December 28, 2008, 06:06:31 pm »
Well this bow started with a great Christmas gift from Dana last year. He sent me a nice hard maple stave. Thanks Dana.
The stave sat around until the  TN. classic and I brought it along to work on.
Pappy helped me lay it out and even cut the shape on his bandsaw. I was going to tiller it out there but lost my drive after news my dog in the pic bellow got hit by a car and died while I was at the classic.
Then summer came and I was too busy to work it but little by little It started turning into a bow. I had to do a lot of heat adjusting and tempered the belly as well.
I posted lots of pictures and got great advice from all of you on the message board so I give you all credit as well Thanks.
Ok  Here it is 66"ntn 1 3/4 wide till mid limb then tapers to 1/2" tips pulls 54#@28" and holds reflex when unstrung. Shoots hard and fast. Im a fan of maple after this one. Its a fun wood to work. dyed with rit mixed with acetone. sealed with spar urethane.   Thanks for looking                              Jesse

Now, THAT'S A PRETTY BOW!!   Looks nice just sitting there and the full draw pics make my pulse pick up a couple of beats.   I love the knocks, very nice.   Dang funny looking grass......here in Louisiana it's green, not white.

Keep up the good work.   piper

OUTSTANDING! That's a fine looking bow, Jesse. Tiller looks dead on and that is a cool looking dye job. Color matches the quiver. ;)

Howdy Jesse,

As others have stated, you turned a darn good stave into a darn good bow - be proud!

So, can you talk a little more about the stain job on that bow?   Rit dye and Acetone?  Did you simply substitute acetone for the water on the directions off the box of Rit?  Or, did you use less acetone, or...?

Thank for the info, and happy holidays,

Piper I still gotta get up and say hi to your buddy in iron river
Eddie I thought you would notice the quiver. YoU made it. I use it all the time
conoe I was looking for alcohol which I normally use but couldnt find any so I used acetone. I didnt read the pack or measure just made a paste and brushed it on. its cocoa brown rit powder.

Thanks Dave. First time I played around with maple for a bow but not the last. No nasty smelling dust like the ipe Ive been using. When I cooked the belly it smelled good enough to eat ;D

very nice bow Jesse.  i really like the finish. I'll have to try that on my next bow. what exactly is heat treating? Is it used for straightening the limbs? Keep up the good work. B.T.w. are you close to the U.P?  you cant be far w/ the white stuff all around.
