walking stick bow?
« on: December 12, 2008, 01:49:33 pm »
this past summer i was involved in alot of bow building projects including the"backpack bow challenge". i believe it was there that i read about some people were building bows that could be used also as a walking stick. a friend of mine ask me to build him a bow to take backpacking and i wanted to make it in such a way that it would be in his hand as much as possible if you know what i mean. ;) ;)he's not a hunter he just wants to play when in the woods.
a couple of questions; would the cross section be like a warbow?
how or what would you use to protect the bottom bow tip and nock?
would it have to be a "d" bow in profile?
i don't know his draw length yet just doing some research.

A D bow is bascially you're waling stick- especially when using a good dense wood like Osage. My current bow, an Osage ELB, is practically square at the handle. Osage can take alot of abuse, and hickory can as well to an extent- but it woulnd't be able to put up with as much bow weight. For your friend, I'm sure any good hardwood, about as tall as he is and tillered circularly, would make a fine walking stick and bow pulling 40# or so.

I make cedar canes for friends of mine at our Church and I go to ace hardware and by rubber tips of different sizes to protect the end that touches the ground. If you let that end project a little extra one of the small ones should do the trick.

I named a bow "walkingstick" one time and it broke shortly thereafter,

so i'd try and come up with another name for it
