Looks just like the Persimmon I cut 2 week ago. The one I cut still had the fruit on it.

I took some more pictures today of the trunk up near the top and of the twigs.  There was no fruit on it or on the ground around it and compared to all the other persimmon trees I've looked at, (thousands) the limbs seem fairly easy to break.   I could be wrong, but I just don't think it's persimmon.

Saw, my 2cents is sweetgum.  LOOKS LIKE MY NEIGHBORS TREE BEFORE HE CUT IT DOWN LAST YEAR.but it put out little porcupine looking balls.  Dismount

It could be sweetgum.  I don't recall seeing those little spiney balls anywhere around it though.  As best I can remember, sweetgum prefers low areas. This was cut on a ridge.  I guess anything is possibe though ???
  I have a sweetgum on the edge of my place.  When it stops raining, I'll go take a look at it and compare the two.   Thanks for your opinions :)

Looks like serviceberry to me?.....I've got a couple growing on our lot in south Texas.  Splits easy.  The berries fall off and disintegrate....the birds love 'em too.....so you might not be seeing them.

I've never seen serviceberry that big and with such rough bark and it don't split easy. Of course
everything is bigger in Texas eh ;) :) No idea Shannon, but if you decide ya don't want it send a stave to me

looks like persimmon (common?), if so it will be light compared to woods such as maple, oak, hick, or blk locust. How about dog wood, probably not with the smooth bark on that one top part.

It's not sourwood is it? We have trees that look like that here and I think thats what the old timers call it.
