What is this wood?

I cut this the other day thinking it was black gum, but everything I've read says that black gum is hard to split.  This wasn't, now I'm second guessing myself.  The tree was tall for its diameter, maybe 25 or 30 feet.
  I don't have a leaf to go with it. 
 I've pretty much ruled out everything but black gum or some other type of gum.  Anybody else have an opinion?

i aint the best at this,however it looks like one i cut that i think may be an as of some type.
but wait for the experts.

Beats me...fine rings and really white wood.......maybe Persimmon????

That's what I'm thinking Shannon - Mike beat me to it but the first thing that popped into my head was persimmon. The older one's around here have bark just like that.

Sawfiler does the wood have a "yellowish " tinge ta it ?

It's not ash. I've worked at a sawmill for the last 14 years and know it very well. Not persimmon either.  I also considered soft maple ??? I can't right off remember what it looks like.
 Bob, it might have a very slight yellow tint, but more like the color of maple.

Shannon soft maples have a smooth bark, especially at that size. At least up here they do.

The wood looks like hazel, but the bark does not.

The bark looks like persimmon but the wood looks to light to be persimmon, at least compared to the trees I have growing here.

Looks like persimmon to me, too. Could also maybe be sourwood or silverbell. The bark does look like black gum, but like you said, it's usually hard to split. Don't think I've ever tried splitting a small blackgum though. If you can take a pic of the twigs and buds we could probably ID it for sure.

I'll take a few pics today of the twigs and such ;) Like you said Steve, could it still be gum, just easier to split because of the size?

I was thinking persimmon or sourwood also.  See if the crown has shoots that grow straight up with a reddish (sometimes green) tint to them.    Pat

It looks like sourwood to me. At least thats what everyone calls it here.
